SJCC
Promotional Video
October 2023 (3 weeks)
Background
As a Video Production Intern at SJCC I was assigned the project of creating a promotional video for the Basic Needs department at San Jose City College. I actively engaged with my clients, working closely with them on a one-on-one basis to ensure that the final product precisely aligned with their unique requirements and preferences. Utilizing tools such as After Effects, Illustrator, Photoshop, and Figma, I was able to bring the client's vision to life seamlessly
PRE-PRODUCTION PLANNING
Role
Video Production Intern
Defining the purpose of the promotional video helped to create a video product that effectively align the product with the intended purpose and use case. My client decided on a video that was catchy but also had an educational tone.
Goal Alignment w/ Stakeholder
Shot List
I utilized shot list to provide the client with a visual representation of how the video would be structured and our intended approach. Additionally, I generated multiple versions to offer the client a range of options. By establishing a clear video structure with the client, I ensured that all stakeholders remained aligned and informed throughout the duration of the project.
Client decided to go with Option 2 as they felt it was more dynamic and met their needs best.

PRODUCTION
Footage List
In the production phase I created a footage list to organize all the video clips that have been filmed. It helped manage the editing process by keeping track of all available footage.
Initial Iteration
By creating an initial iteration of the promotional video, I was able to present a tangible example of the concept to the client, allowing us to discuss their preferences in detail. Through this process, we identified key elements they liked and areas that needed adjustment, ensuring the final product aligned with their vision.
Stakeholder’s Feedback
Taking in feedback from the client allowed me to create a product that addressed the their needs the best. Also, communicating effectiveness of the changes and design limitations was critical during this process. Here were some of the key elements that the client wanted to be incorporated:
Create a more effective outro with a stronger CTA
Wording changes
Altering content and videos
Final Design
REFLECTION
Outcome + Lessons Learned
The creative development and production process generated valuable content and ideas for enhancing the promotional video for San Jose City College's Basic Needs Department. Throughout this project, stakeholders were actively involved and advised on the most effective approach for the final video.
Here are some lessons from this video project:
Communition is key
Assessing client feedback is essential for the the success of a project. Client feedback can be a mixed bag at times with good and bad ideas that can alter a projects quality. Specific to this project, my client wanted a QR code as a contact point for viewers. However, QR codes don’t work well in a video format as viewers don’t pause to scan the QR code. Instead, I incorporated the email and phone number of the Basic Needs Department as the contact point and primary CTA of this video. Guiding client feedback allows for a more successful and impact product.
Guide client feedback, don’t reject
Establishing open communication with the client is key to effective collaboration. It allows for a clear exchange of ideas, ensuring that the project's goals and vision are well understood by all parties involved. Also, visual communion is as important as verbal communication. Utilizing shot lists and footage list, I was able to give the client a better understanding and vision of the final product.
